About the Opportunity

The Intake Worker is required to effectively engage, screen, assess, refer, and provide brief interventions for young people aged between 12-25 years that contact or are referred to headspace. As one of the first points of contact for young people at headspace, they will be skilled in assessing a young person’s needs and be required to conduct complex risk assessments and have the ability to action a plan to mitigate any identified risk. 

Working closely and collaboratively with other members of the headspace team, Intake Workers ensure all activities are conducted in accordance with the operational and business model of the service and directions provided by the Clinical and Operations Manager or delegate.  

On a day to day basis, you will:

  • Provide thorough intake assessments to young people (and their families/carers) looking to access headspace services to determine suitability for service.
  • Independently manage, respond to and triage incoming referrals from multiple streams including self-referrals via phone and online form and service provider referrals.
  • Manage and respond to general enquiries for support and assist members of the community to appropriately refer to headspace or alternative care pathways.
  • Oversee all follow up and care coordination of referrals not suitable for the headspace program and assist young people (and their families/carers) to engage in more appropriate service streams. 
  • Participate in regular clinical review meetings and multi-disciplinary team meetings to ensure appropriate, consistent and coordinated service pathways and service delivery response for young people and their families/carers. 
  • Build and maintain collaborative working relationships with internal and external service providers, including General Practitioners and other medical professionals, Government Departments and services, Non-Government Organisations, and schools. 
  • Maintain accurate and timely progress notes and reports using electronic medical records system, and data using relevant headspace data systems.
  • Assertive monitoring of young people where risk is indicated, including regularly assessing the current level of risk and developing action plans to mitigate any risk in accordance with the Flourish Australia and headspace National risk management frameworks.

Selection Criteria

Essential:

  • Undertaking study or completion of tertiary qualifications in Psychology, Social Work, Nursing, Occupational Therapy or other allied health discipline recognised by the tertiary mental health services sector. 
  • Demonstrate skills and experience in the provision of mental health assessment and triage including care coordination, brief mental health assessments, risk assessments and crisis intervention/safety planning and brief interactions with young people. 
  • Able to demonstrate some knowledge of recovery focused and family inclusive practice. 
  • Have a basic understanding and/or knowledge of the concept and impact of mental health issues in the community. 
  • Able to demonstrate the importance of, and have a clear and strong understanding of, the value of team work. 
  • Have excellent interpersonal and communication skills and ability to impart knowledge in a learning environment. 
  • Able to demonstrate a flexible approach to service delivery. 
  • Have a high degree of computer literacy, including demonstrated experience with report writing and electronic client information management systems.
